Brass Valves

Brass valves are  valves with a spherical disc, the part of the valve which controls the flow through it. The sphere has a hole, or port, through the middle so that when the port is in line with both ends of the valve, flow will occur. When the valve is closed, the hole is perpendicular to the ends of the valve, and flow is blocked. The handle or lever will be inline with the port position letting you “see” the valve’s position. The ball valve, along with the butterfly valve and plug valve, are part of the family of quarter turn valves.

Brass valves are durable and usually work to achieve perfect shutoff even after years of disuse. They are therefore an excellent choice for shutoff applications (and are often preferred to globe valves and gate valves for this purpose). They do not offer the fine control that may be necessary in throttling applications but are sometimes used for this purpose.

Ball valves are used extensively in industrial applications because they are very versatile, supporting pressures up to 1000 bars and temperatures up to 200°C. Sizes typically range from 0.5 cm to 30 cm. They are easy to repair and operate.

The body of ball valves may be made of metal, plastic or metal with a ceramic center. The ball is often chrome plated to make it more durable.

A ball-check valve is a type of check valve with a ball without a hole for a disc, and is not covered in this article.

Depending on the shape of the lock or regulator brass ball valves are divided into the cone and ball.

Gland cone valves provide better protection against leakage of the working environment in the atmosphere (due to gland), but have quickly wear element – the soft packings, which requires more frequent servicing.

Brass Valves

The consensus seems to be that brass valves are not a preferred material for stills because of the possible lead content. However, as I look through pictures of stills, inluding those built by admins/moderators/experts I still see brass, particularly for tube fittings and valves. I’m specifically talking about fittings/valves in distillate liquid/vapor service, I am ignoring any that are on the cooling water side. So what gives?

My current setup has two brass valves (reflux return to column and product take off) and a couple of other random brass bits and pieces (unions, nipples, etc.) I can get rid of the nipples with a little bit of redesign, I can solder over the exposed brass on the unions, but the needle valves are proving to be particularly troublesome (read: expensive) to get rid of. 1/4″ needle valves in SS are ~$70 versus $10-$20 for a brass needle valve so I have a very strong incentive to go with brass. However, I don’t need to be any dumber than I already am so I’d like to eliminate any potential sources of lead if it is really a problem. How many of you are using brass needle valves? I could replace the reflux valve with a SS ball valve ($25) because it only needs to be on/off but the product take-off valve needs to be a needle valve. Perhaps a needle valve with a carbon steel body and SS needle ($25) instead of an all SS valve?

Brass Plumbing Fitting

Kitec is a brass plumbing fitting system that was manufactured by a Canadian corporation named IPEX sold in the United States until IPEX discontinued the product line in 2007.  Kitec became a popular alternative to copper in the mid-1990’s due to its inexpensive cost and simple installation. IPEX marketed Kitec as a rugged, corrosion-resistant alternative to copper that would hold up under aggressive water conditions.

The Kitec brass  plumbing  fitting system consists of both pipe and fittings. Kitec water pipe was manufactured as a composite cross-linked polyethylene (“PEX”) and aluminum (“AL”) pipe, whereby a thin, flexible aluminum layer was “sandwiched” between inner and outer layers of PEX plastic.  Thus, Kitec water pipe was commonly referred to as “PEX-AL-PEX” pipe. Kitec pipe and fittings were connected together using either a crimped aluminum or copper ring or a compression fitting using a locking nut and split ring.

In 2005, Kitec fittings became the subject of a state class action lawsuit filed against IPEX in Clark County, Nevada. Kitec fittings were for the most part made of brass, which is mainly composed of copper and zinc. The Clark County lawsuit alleged that Kitec fittings failed because of a chemical reaction called dezincification. As alleged in the Clark County lawsuit, when hot and/or “aggressive” water flowed through the brass fittings, the zinc leached out of the fittings, thereby weakening the structural integrity of the brass and, ultimately, causing failure in the fittings.

The Clark County lawsuit only concerned Kitec fitting failures occurring in that jurisdiction, and did not concern Kitec piping product, or Kitec fitting failures occurring outside of Clark County, Nevada.  However, failures of Kitec hot water pipe and fittings have been reported across the United States, prompting the filing of multiple federal nationwide class action lawsuits and investigations concerning the manufacturing process and composition of Kitec hot water pipe. During the Kitec hot water pipe manufacturing process, IPEX added an “antioxidant” to the PEX, which is a product intended to prevent the PEX from quickly corroding under the effects of light, oxygen, heat, and water exposure. In the case of Kitec hot water pipe, it appears that the antioxidant is rapidly depleting from the PEX, resulting in separation of the PEX-AL-PEX layers, corrosion of the PEX and the aluminum core and, ultimately, premature failure of the pipe.

Introduce ourchairman of  ”sport atv“first,Una lite scoppiata forse per una battuta di troppo, l’ira che prende il sopravvento e poi botte, pugni e calci fino alla morte. Questo, secondo la procura e i carabinieri di Prato, lo scenario che sta dietro l’omicidio di Abdelkebir Tayaa, il marocchino di 45 anni trovato cadavere lo scorso 3 giugno nel parcheggio di Pratilia. Accusati di omicidio volontario sono finiti in carcere, stamani, due rumeni di 26 e 27 anni; un loro connazionale, 25 anni, e’ stato invece arrestato per favoreggiamento. Un delitto d’impeto: ne’ una spedizione punitiva ne’ un regolamento di conti per questioni di droga come si era ipotizzato in un primo momento anche per via dei precedenti penali della vittima. I presunti assassini sono incensurati, il loro complice ha trascorsi penali per rissa. Abdelkebir Tayaa era conosciuto con il soprannome ‘ricciolo’, non aveva fissa dimora, tirava avanti con piccoli lavori.        A  Study for the University of Kentucky claims that the current national standards that link a riders age to the size of the engine they can handle aren’t as good as they should be. Researchers suggested that this undermines safety and increases the odds of serious crashes. Initial experiments from the study found that the national standards linking a rider’s age to the size of an Kids ATV of  engine often overlook whether the driver is too tall – or too short – to adequately brake, steer or accelerate the machine.While the study doesn’t question the need for age standards, it concludes sometimes even an adult-sized frame should be combined with a child-sized motor, or the reverse.“That’s a very awkward situation,” said Andrew Bernard, a trauma surgeon at the university who led the study. “The kid feels naturally like he fits the bigger one, but the engine feels way overpowered.
